The Great Migration: Richard Ibrook. Origin: Southwold, Suffolk. Migration :1635. First Residence: Hingham. Estate: "The several parcels of land and meadow legally given unto Mr. Richard Ibrooke by the town of Hingham";"for a houselot four acres," 1635; "for a planting lot six acres of land at Nantascott," 1635; "four acres of meadow at Nantascott," 1635; "for a great lot fourteen acres of land lying on the great plain in the first furlong to the eastward from the center," 1637; "four acres of salt marsh at Conyehassett, it is the tenth lot in the first division ... which said four acres of meadow is given in satisfaction for four acres given him at Nantascott," 1647; and "a small island called by the name of Mr. Ibrook's Island, it is the first island northward as you come from Nantascott lying to the west of the old planters' hill and to the east of Crow Point" [HiBOP 28]. Birth: By about 1583 (based on estimated date of marriage). Death: Hingham [14] November 1651 [NEHGR 121:24]. Marriage: By 1607 Margaret ____.  She died at Hingham on 4 April 1664 and was buried there on 5 April 1664 [NEHGR 121:116].  Children: i  John Ibrook, bp Southwold, Suffolk, 13 Sep 1607; bur. there 21 Sep 1607.  ii.  Elizabeth Ibrook, bp Southwold, Suffolk, 31 Aug 1608 [TAG 12:132]; m. Covehithe, Suffolk, 12 Oct 1628 Rev. Peter Hobart [TAG 67:28], son of Edmund Hobart (1633, Charlestown) [GMB 2:959]. iii. Christian Ibrook, b. about 1611 (aged 26 in 1637 [Hotten 295]; m. by about 1633 William Cockerun (1635, Hingham) [TAG 12:132-34; GM 2:2:114-17]. iv. Thomas Ibrook, bp Southwold, Suffolk, 10 Aug 1615; bur there 17 Mar 1615/16.  v.  Ann Ibrook, bp. Southwold, Suffolk, 3 Jun 1617, bur. there 28 Jul 1619.  vi. Margaret Ibrook, bp. Southwold, Suffolk, 3 Sep 1620;  m. Charlestown 13 Feb 1638/9 John Tower (1637, Hingham) [NEHGR 121:11].  vii. Helen Ibrook, bp. Southwold, Suffolk, 10 Nov 1622; m. Cambridge [blank] Mar 1637/8 Joshua Hobard [NEHGR 2:252, 121:10], son of Edmund Hobart (1633, Charlestown) [GMB 2:959].  viii. Mathew Ibrook (daughter), bp. Southwold, Suffolk, 16 Jun 1626; no further record. (This form of the forename can be a variant of Martha.).  Associations: John Brandon and Leslie Mahler have noted than, on or about 29 Nov 1664, Jeremiah Hobart, son of Peter and Elizabeth (Ibrook) Hobart, and grandson of Richard Ibrook, referred to Elizabeth (Hunter) Woodbury, wife of Humphrey Woodbury, as "our cousin" [EQC 3:224-25]. This observation occurs in the context of Mahler's discovery that Richard Hollingsworth and his wife, Susanna (Gentleman) (Hunter) Holingsworth, also derived from Southwold, Suffolk [TAG 78:241-44]. Although the exact relationship remains to be discovered, another piece of the puzzle is the use of the forename Christian in both the Hunter and Ibrook families.  Comments: Richard Ibrook was bailiff (churchwarden)  at Southwold, Suffolk, in 1624 [Southwold PR].  No record for the family of Richard Ibrook has been found in Southwold after 1626. In particular, no burial record has been found there for daughter Mathew, a child for whom there is no record in New England. The family may have moved to some other parish for a few years before their migration to New England. On 5 Mar 1638/9, "Rich[a]rd Ibrooke, for tempting 2 or more maids to uncleanness, was fined 5 to the country, & 20s. apiece to the 2 maids, Rebecca Phippen & Mary Marsh" [MBCR 1:2247,249].
